Text Message Series

My text message series that I am printing large format on Matte paper

Crit

Yesterday I was told to work more on my fiber experiments so I attached them to my  extra canvas I made and created a more unified piece.

Reflection

I had an extremely interesting time making this series of wax faces. I started with bees wax but found it to be rather difficult to sculpt a face with, I then used red wax and it was much easier to work with. I attached hooks on the back of the wooden pieces that I have cut and painted so that way the faces can hang on the wall. The faces that are attached directly on the wall can be easily removed and placed as well they simply stick to the wall easily.

I decided to paint the wax with acrylic paint to give the faces a shiny almost cartoony look. I also like how after the wax has been painted it is hard to tell what the faces are intentionally made of.

Sculpting with wax was extremely time consuming and also painful I might add, it is very different from clay which is a medium I m very familiar with. Once the wax cools down it becomes more moldable and easier to work with but this is only after the wax melts completely.

Process for Final Crit

I am continuing my face experiment with now using red wax, the red wax is a lot easier to work with than the bees wax. I am planning on painting the faces and paint the blocks of wood and add hooks in order for the wood panels to hang on the wall. I really like the fact that when I paint the faces made of wax you cant tell what they are made from due to the affect of the acrylic paint gives on the wax. Almost turns the whole face into plastic.

Crit

I recently experiemented with wood and placement and also molding faces with wax. I want to create a bunch of faces and give it more animation

Crit 4

With this crit I got a lot of helpful advice from my classmates and what I presented in class were my canvases I constructed and stretched, with my fiber experiments on them filled with cotton. The class agreed that I should remove them from the structure and try to create different levels of focal points using a different structure such a chicken wire which I acquired that same day.

I also tried different materials such as stuffed leggings I have worn to women rights marches this past year and created these "pillow" type fiber experiments that I weaved. I put them up on the wall along with my canvases but after crit I realized I would like them to be apart of the floor due to their color and scale.

I plan on making more of the "pillow" like fiber experiments, as well as remove the fiber experiments from my canvases and instead working with chicken wire and covering it with fabric and see how it goes!

Crit 3

What I learned from this experimentation was how to construct a frame from wood and make a stretch canvas. I made two stretched canvases and also constructed the frame. I then attached my fiber experiments onto the stretch canvas by sewing them on individually. I plan on making many more fiber experiments and hope to fill up a whole wall with them. I wanted the canvas to be a structure  for the fiber experiments giving them elevation. When I add many many more they will have some higher points and lower points to help the eye wander.

Process

Bought a staple gun and stretched the canvas around the frame and stapled it together they hang perfectly on the wall as well.  I plan on attaching my fiber experiments as well as more onto them.

Process

With my fiber experiments I made with a DIY loom, I constructed a frame out of wood by cutting them and then cutting them into 45 degree angles to create the frame. I then stretched a canvas around the frame and added my fiber experiments as well as more cotton to take away from the square shape frame.

Process

For my next experimentation with materials, I want to create stretch canvases, and make the frame to stretch the canvas out of wood.

I want this to be a structure for my last project and I want to stitch on and attach the circle loom experiments  onto them to expand the piece more. as well as made more loomed experiments.

I want to try and experiment with lumber and see how I can make something with it since I have little to no experience.
I went to the Mother Land of Lumber and went to home depot and bought some 2 by 4s and some ply wood and see how I can play with it!
